In 1926, Dr. Woodson launched Negro History Week to ensure the achievements, contributions, and history of African Americans were studied and recognized—because he saw how often they were ignored or erased from mainstream education. He chose February to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both central figures in Black history.
Over time, that week grew in impact and popularity, and in 1976, it officially became Black History Month in the United States.
