Updated: 6 hours ago

The Villages of Hayti groundbreaking marked a historic and transformative moment for the Durham community, symbolizing renewed investment, economic opportunity, and the preservation of the rich cultural legacy of the historic Hayti district. The Villages of Hayti is planned for the former Fayette Place site and will bring 252 affordable housing units to the area.

Community leaders, elected officials, developers, residents, and stakeholders gathered to celebrate the launch of a project designed to bring affordable housing, mixed-use development, and community-centered revitalization to one of Durham’s most historically significant African American communities. The event highlighted a shared commitment to honoring Hayti’s legacy while creating new pathways for growth, stability, and opportunity for current and future residents.

Speakers throughout the ceremony emphasized the importance of equitable development, community partnership, and ensuring that longtime residents benefit from Durham’s continued growth. The Villages of Hayti project was recognized not only as a construction initiative, but as an investment in preserving culture, strengthening neighborhoods, and expanding access to housing and economic resources. The groundbreaking served as both a celebration of progress and a reminder of Hayti’s enduring role in Durham’s Black history, entrepreneurship, and community leadership.
