Dr. Darrick Hamilton is an American economist, academic, and public intellectual renowned for his pioneering work in stratification economics, which investigates how identity—particularly race, gender, and ethnicity—and entrenched systemic inequalities shape economic, educational, and health outcomes.
He currently holds the title of Henry Cohen Professor of Economics and Urban Policy and serves as a University Professor at The New School for Social Research. He is also the founding director of the Institute on Race, Power, and Political Economy at the same institution. Prior to joining The New School in 2021, he was the executive director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University.
In late 2024, Dr. Hamilton was appointed Chief Economist of the AFL-CIO, the largest labor federation in the U.S., where he now plays a key role in developing progressive economic strategies for unionized workers.
Dr. Hamilton’s work stands at the intersection of rigorous economics and moral advocacy—shaping policies that rethink equity, economic power, and social justice.
