Law Day with Judge Dorothy Hairston Mitchell

Law Day in Durham has become an important civic and legal tradition that highlights the importance of justice, constitutional rights, and equal access to the courts. Organized by the Durham County Bar Association and members of the local legal community, the annual observance brings together judges, attorneys, law students, and residents to reaffirm their commitment to the rule of law and public service. Recent Law Day events in Durham have included public gatherings at the Durham County Courthouse, where legal professionals renewed their attorney oaths and emphasized the importance of protecting judicial independence and civic engagement.

Dorothy Hairston Mitchell has been a respected and visible leader within Durham’s legal and civic community, participating in Law Day activities and broader efforts focused on justice, advocacy, and community empowerment. A District Court Judge, former law professor at North Carolina Central University School of Law, and chair of the North Carolina Commission on Indigent Defense Services, Judge Mitchell has dedicated much of her career to juvenile justice, criminal law, and supporting children and families. Her presence during Law Day observances reflects Durham’s longstanding tradition of legal professionals using their platforms to educate, inspire, and encourage public trust in the justice system.
